Bill Fenton Motorsports Puts Both Acuras in Top 5 at The Glen

July 10, 2007 - WATKINS GLEN, NY - Bill Fenton Motorsports positioned both of their Acura RSX-S cars into Street Tuner’s top five during Saturday’s three-hour KONI Challenge race at Watkins Glen.

Bill Fenton Motorsports Puts Both Acuras in Top 5 at The Glen

Bill Fenton and Bob Beede finished fourth in the No. 29 Southern Auto Auction Acura, followed by Todd Lamb and Dave Thilenius in the No.  27 Aprilia/2Wheel Tuner Acura.

The weekend went smoothly right from the start. After struggling with setup issues during the past two races, the team went back to a formula that they knew would work at the historic track. Rain cut practice short, but everyone adapted quickly to the track.

“I feel like I got to know the track pretty well and was able to get up to speed even with the shortened practice,” said Lamb, who was at The Glen for the first time. “It’s an easy track to learn, but it’s still challenging to drive. I always enjoy being on a true road course.”

Qualifying was proof that both cars were setup well and the drivers attuned to the track. Thilenius earned a seventh-place starting spot in the ST class, and Fenton was not far behind in tenth.

Pit stop strategy in the race was different for both cars. Fenton chose to pit during an early caution period, sending Beede out in the No. 29 car. The team would have to stop later for a splash of fuel.

Thilenius, meanwhile, stopped early for fuel, and pitted about halfway through the race to hand the No. 27 Acura to Lamb. It was a gamble that paid off, admitted Lamb, saying, “We were pretty tight on fuel near the end, so a late-race caution turned out to be just what we needed.”

In the final laps, Lamb was trying to negotiate a pass for third when Beede decided to join the chase. Beede wound up passing his own teammate for fourth with the checkered flag nearly in sight.

Both Acuras have had success this year, and each has been on the ST podium, but Watkins Glen marked the first time this season that both cars have earned a top-five finish in the same event.

The next race for Bill Fenton Motorsports will be at Trois-Rivieres on August 17-19.
